Revelation – 3 Scenes and 2 Teams

Focusing on Revelation chapter 14, David’s question this week was:

What did John see next?

John saw 3 things:

  1. Jesus and the people of God (vs 1-5)
  2. Three angels (vs 6-13)
  3. Two harvests (vs 14-20)

What are we up against? What is confronting us until Jesus returns?
We are up against an unholy trinity of two beasts and Satan. So, we are in a fight and we should be ready for it; it is not a surprise.

Scene ONE (vs 1-5)
The Lamb, Jesus and God’s People

“I HAVE INSTALLED MY KING ON ZION, MY HOLY HILL.”

This clarifies that Jesus is now King over all nations – he is the victorious one and we are on the winning side. All God’s people, 144,000, are standing with Jesus in his presence, with the symbol of ownership on their foreheads.
These verses spell out the characteristics of true disciples of Jesus Christ. What are these?

 1.  We are REDEEMED (v.3) – as illustrated at the Communion Table.

“YOU ARE WORTHY TO TAKE THE SCROLL AND TO OPEN ITS SEALS, BECAUSE YOU WERE SLAIN, AND WITH YOUR BLOOD YOU PURCHASED FOR GOD PERSONS FROM EVERY TRIBE AND LANGUAGE AND PEOPLE AND NATION.”

2.  We are SURRENDERED (v.4); we have given back what we have already been given.

“THEREFORE, I URGE YOU, BROTHERS AND SISTERS, IN VIEW OF GOD’S MERCY, TO OFFER YOUR BODIES AS A LIVING SACRIFICE, HOLY AND PLEASING TO GOD – THIS IS YOUR TRUE AND PROPER WORSHIP.”

3.  We are FAITHFUL. Verse 4 indicates that the people of God have NOT defiled themselves, that is, we are faithful lovers of Jesus.
4.  We are FOLLOWERS (v.4), what we are called to be as disciples.
5.  We are CHRISTLIKE (v.5); we are blameless, people of integrity, who live as Christ walked.
6.  We are SINGERS of a new song (v.3).

Scene TWO
Three Angels (vs 6-13)

The first proclaims the eternal gospel (v.6).
The second proclaims the fall of Babylon, the Great One, the code word for humanity in general living against God (v.8).
The third emphasises the horrific consequences of rebellion and refusing God (vs 9-11).
A sober message: God’s wrath is real and judgment is awaited. Life without God leads to eternity without God.

GOD’S WRATH WHICH MEN AND WOMEN CHOOSE FOR THEMSELVES. BEFORE HELL IS AN EXPERIENCE INFLICTED BY GOD, IT IS A STATE FOR WHICH MAN HIMSELF OPTS.

Scene THREE
Two Harvests (vs 14-20)

One is carried out by Jesus, gathering his own to himself – happening now.
The second is carried out by an angel with a sickle. This is interpreted as either judgement or as salvation. Note the reference to ‘outside the city’ (v.20), at the Cross where wrath and salvation meet. There is enough blood for all those who are being saved.

The service closed with singing “What can wash away my sin?”

Summary
As we face the challenges of Satan and his followers, we remember what characterises our identity as Christians. We are:
1. Redeemed
2. Surrendered
3. Faithful
4. Followers
5. Christlike
6. Singers

We are on the winning side, but Revelation chapter 14 reminds us of the challenges which confront us.

My Takeaway
David identified two teams – Team Lamb and Team Beast – and we must choose. Team Beast are trying to get people to change sides.
